Black Forest – aka Davis Farm hiking trails

Directions from Rte 2: Turn onto Old Road to Nine Acre Corner from Rte 2 like you are going to Emerson Hospital, take an immediate right onto Old Marlboro Rd, follow that road 3-3.5 miles until you reach a stop light at Rte 117 in Sudbury (in reality this Old Marlboro Rd turns into Old Picard at Blueberry Lane, then Dakin Rd when you cross over into Sudbury but as long as you don’t turn off the road you will reach Rte 117 as described above). Take a left at the stop light and go approximately ½ mile, on your right you should see a deep parking area that leads to playing fields, this is Davis Field. If you get to the Office Park on the left #142-150 North road, you’ve gone too far.

Instead of Parking at the Field parking lot, there is a smaller parking lot approx. 300 feet west on the same side of the road.

Concord Town Forest

Located at 500 Walden St in Concord, MA - across from the entrance to the Concord Carlisle High School.
Directions: From Rte 2 take Walden Street (Rte 126) toward Concord Center, shortly after you turn (1/4 mile or so) take a right into the parking area (right across from the entrance to the High School).

Chamberlain Woods

This property consists of 59 acres of land, mostly wooded, on the East side of Lowell Road, and abuts Estabrook Woods and areas around Bateman’s Pond.  It is located at approx. 1140 Lowell Rd in Concord MA. If you plug that into Google Maps and use the street view tool, you will see on the east side of the road a shoulder where parking is permitted. The sign designating ‘Chamberlain Woods’ is not visible, but the ‘Red Gate’ that leads to that portion of Estabrook Woods and is shown on the Estabrook Woods map which you can see here http://sudburytrails.info/ells.html .

Directions: from downtown Concord, take Lowell Rd off of Monument Square (to the left of the Colonial Inn), go approximately 2 miles, parking is a shoulder area just off the street.

Estabrook Woods -  this entrance is no longer recommended due to neighbor and parking issues.  If you do utilize this venue, park ONLY in marked areas and please be mindful of the neighbor's horses and dogs, do not let your dog off leash until well into the woods.

Our adventure this week will be at Estabrook Woods – a walk down the lane. We will access the woods at the end of Estabrook Lane in Concord. You must park only on the left side of the road, please pay attention to all posted no parking signs and avoid parking in front of any horse pasture gates! You will get a parking ticket!

Frost Farm Sudbury  - this location is no longer recommended due to the erosion and cynanobacteria concerns in White Pond
Directions from Rte 2 turn like you are going to Emerson Hospital, and take an immediate right onto Old Marlboro Rd, follow that road straight for 3-3.5 miles. In reality Old Marlborough Rd turns into Old Picard Rd at Blueberry Lane then into Dakin Road when you cross into Sudbury, if you just remember not to turn off the road you are on, you will eventually hit the stop light at Rte 117 in Sudbury at the Fire Station. THEN, take a left, go a 1/2 mile or so, just AFTER Davis Field (which will be on your right) take a LEFT at the green sign that says 142-150 North Rd. Then take the first left before the office building. You should see the entrance to the Conservation area on your left (look for the shed style sign). Find a parking spot as close to the entrance as you can, we can meet at the entrance sign. Again, the entrance to the conservation area is just to the left of the entrance to Frost Farm Village Condos.

Alternative Directions from Concord Center: Take Sudbury Road to Nine Acre Corner, go right at Nine Acre Corner onto Rte 117 West. Go approx 1 mile take a RIGHT at the green sign that says 142-150 North Rd.

Nashoba Brook in Acton
Directions: From the Concord Rotary take Rte 2a to Acton, go 2.5 miles then turn right onto Davis road.  Go 1/4 mile to trail head on left.

Mattison Field

Directions: From Rte 2 Old Road to Nine Acre Corner, continue approximately 1 mile to parking are on left side of Road.  Trail Map http://www.concordland.org/images/hosmer.pdf

Mt. Misery

Directions: From Rte 2 take Sudbury road toward Rte 117 (Nine Acre Corner). At the intersection of 117 and Sudbury Rd take a left toward Lincoln. Go approx. 1 mi to large parking area on left (it’s a little tricky to see – if you go past a pond on your LEFT you’ve gone too far). The closest address on Google I could find is 100 S. Great Road, Lincoln MA.  If you type that into Google and click on the street view you can advance a click at a time until you see the parking lot.

Newbury Land

This is part of the Concord Land Conservation Commission land trust it is located at 1135 Lowell road almost directly across the street from the Red Gate entrance to Estabrook (it is on the opposite side of the street, marked by two blue reflectors and looks like a driveway – a bit hard to find, but worth it).

Park on Lowell Road by the Red Gate entrance and cross the street on foot as there is limited parking at the Newbury trail head.

I have attached the link to the trail map http://www.concordland.org/images/Newbury%20for%20website.pdf , this is another upland open field type area with lots of room for doing group obedience exercises.

The Prison Land at Warner Pond

Our adventure this week will in West Concord at the end of Wright Road off Laws Brook Road. From the Training Center (or train tracks in West Concord), head west on Main St toward Commonwealth Ave. At Commonwealth Ave (this is the road that splits off to the right and heads toward the prison and rotary) continue straight onto Laws Brook Road, proceed approx .6 miles to Wright Road (on the right). Go to the end of the road, there and park in the cul de sac. Be sure to avoid parking in front of the fire hydrant and try to leave enough room for the noon school bus to navigate the circle!

Reformatory Branch Trail - from Concord

The rugged and beautiful Reformatory Branch Trail meanders more than 4 miles through three natural areas: Elm Brook Conservation Area, Mary Putnam Webber Wildlife Preserve, and Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and extends from Concord to Bedford.

Parking is available at the Mill Brook Tarry (this is a strip of office/retail condos on Lowell Rd) across from trail head located at 170 Lowell Road in Concord Center, you can also park in the Rite Aid Pharmacy lot or the municipal lot behind the Middlesex Bank down town.  Wherever you decide to park, we will meet at the trail head at 170 Lowell road.

Reformatory Branch Trail - from Rte 62

The rugged and beautiful Reformatory Branch Trail meanders more than 4 miles through three natural areas: Elm Brook Conservation Area, Mary Putnam Webber Wildlife Preserve, and Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and extends from Concord to Bedford.

Travel Rte 62 from Concord center toward Bedford.  Travel 2.3 mile to 398 Concord Road in Bedford, parking on right hand side of road.  The parking area is just after the Bedford Children's Center.

Sandy Pond - East Lincoln, MA

Directions from Rte 2: Take Rte 2 East, Turn right onto Bedford Road (toward Lincoln Center), Take your first left onto Wheeler Road and PARK. Trail to Sandy Pond is across Bedford Road.

Simon Willard Woods

Directions Take Simon Willard Road off Elm Street in Concord MA to approx #325. Parking is on the side of the road, the trail leads to Egg Rock http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_Rockan historic sight.

Spring Hill/Camp Acton/Nashoba Brook Land

We will be accessing this area from 33 Spring Hill Road in Concord, which is off of Pope Rd near Spencer Brook Road. You can read about these areas and print off a trail map at this link http://www.actontrails.org/MapNBSHCA.htm , with roughly 360 acres of conservation land and connecting trails it is an area that can take several trips to really explore!

Stonymeade

Directions: From Rte. 2 at the rotary, take the rotary around until you reach the Rte. 2A exit, follow Rte. 2A approx. 1mi then take a right onto Pope Rd (if you pass Tedeschi’s you’ve gone too far), follow Pope Rd approx. .7 mi take a right onto Stoneymeade way, this is a circle so follow it about ½ way around the circle until you find the Conservation Area Entrance (marked with one of those little shack like billboards). Park along the side of the road, I should already be there.

Wetherbee Conservation Land, Acton Ma
Here is a link to the trail map http://www.actontrails.org/MapWetherbeeLand.htm, this is a relatively small area (72 acres), the loop trail is approx. 1 mile long, parts of it are quite close to Rte 2 so we will be working on leash walking. As long as it hasn’t rained recently there are very few swampy areas, but there is one vernal pool close to the trail head at the end of the field on the right.

Directions from the Rte 2 Rotary:
Take Rotary around until you hit Rte 2 West, go about ½ mile turn right onto Wetherbee Rd (after the horse pasture), go ¼ mi park on either side of the road.
Or
Take Rotary around exit at 2A west, go about ½ mile turn left onto Wetherbee Rd (after the McDonalds), go ¼ mile park on either side of the road.

Wright’s Woods aka Bear Hill

Directions: From Rte. 2 take Sudbury Road toward Sudbury, go approx. ¼ mile, on your left there is what appears to be 2 driveways right next to each other, the first is actually the entrance to one of Concord’s well heads and has a small parking area marked with a split rail fence, turn into this driveway and park. If you are following a GPS nav system it is roughly 586 Sudbury Road in Concord, or if you want to view it before you go plug the address into Google maps and you can see a street view.

From Rte 117 it is approximately 1.9 miles to the set of 2 driveways (just after the large concrete wall on the right covered by ivy). Take the second driveway that leads up to a parking area designated by a split rail fence.
